本研究は、長野県諏訪地方における真言宗の談義所である佛法紹隆寺（長野県諏訪市四賀）と、福島県磐城地方における真言宗の談義所である宝聚院（福島県いわき市西小川）の典籍の調査・研究を中心に、真言宗善通寺派の本山である善通寺（香川県善通寺市）の典籍、浄土宗名越派の本山であった如来寺（いわき市平山崎）の典籍との比較も併せて、中世後期から近世後期における、真言宗寺院の学問形態の変容を明らかにすることを目的とする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study aims to clarify the historical transformation of academic forms in Shingon-shu temples, focusing on the examination of the books of Buppo Shoryuji Temple, a Shingon Buddhist discussion center in the Suwa region of Nagano Prefecture, and Hojuin Temple, a Shingon Buddhist discussion center in the Iwaki region of Fukushima Prefecture. The results revealed the following dynamics: 1) Late Muromachi period to early Edo period: formation of academic studies through the free movement of monks, 2) Early to mid Edo period: preparation for academic studies at local temples following the introduction of the honmatsu system, 3) Mid to late Edo period: completion of academic studies at local temples through the establishment of library collections.
It became clear that there were historical deviations in the books held by temple monks, especially the chief priests, and that they were reconstructed from individual monks to "temple libraries."

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
寺院の典籍調査・研究は、その成果を「新資料」や「古態（良質）の資料」など、個々の典籍に求める傾向にある。しかし、調査対象とした寺院の悉皆調査を続け、ほぼ全典籍の書誌情報データベースを構築したことにより、寺院の僧侶、特に住職の所持した典籍に時代的な偏差があること、僧侶個人から「寺院の蔵書」として再構築されていく動態を把握できる状況が整った。典籍全体を計量化することにより、学問形態の変容を明らかにするという研究は、国内外を通しても行われていないのが現況であり、ここに学術的意義を見いだせる。
また、完成したデータベースを公開をし、誰でも情報を引き出せるところに社会的意義を見いだせる。
