Outline of Research at the Start |
This research elucidates the concepts of literature and the actual literary results around the global network of German artist residencies in Rome, Los Angeles, Kyoto and Istanbul. They are a major instrument of foreign cultural policy of the German government, and support firm policies of friendship and exchange. The literary texts resulting from these programs specifically reflect matters of migration, global entanglement, and cultural identity. They constitute global literature in how they are created and in how they address wide-spread cultural and political insecurities.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In the second year of this 3-year project, PI put a focus on contemporary German literature (fiction, poetry, travelogues) related to the Residency programs. PI invited Doris Doerrie, German writer and movie director, also an alumna of German residency programs abroad, and organized three events i.e. one reading on 22. November 2023 at the University of Tokyo, one workshop on 24. November 2023 at Goethe-Institute Tokyo and one movie screening with interview at the German Cultural Centre (OAG-Haus) Tokyo. PI also managed to publish the research result of the previous year in a co-edited book "Writing in Residence : Globale Literaturproduktion in deutschen Residenzprogrammen" (270 pages, De Gruyter, 2024) and showed his research on German residency programs in a broeder context of Global literature and its production.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
With the invited guest researcher, PI's research on German residency programs abroad and especially the personal experiences with these programs has developed further. The research result of the previous year has, as planned from De Gruyter, been in printing and will be published in 2024.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The focus of the last year of this project will be the Villa Kamogawa. PI will visit this German artists' residence in Kyoto to interview its director and current fellows in order to examine and analyse the text corpus originated there.
