| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究は、近代以降の日本文学における西欧ユートピア思想の受容および展開について、おもに英文学との関わりから詳らかにするものである。日本は「近代化」の過程で、英米によってそれまで蓄積されてきた人間性の理想を受容したが、この伝統のなかには近代における「反近代」思想が内包されており、日本近代文学は、成立と同時に「反近代」としての同時代ユートピア思想を吸収したことになる。単純な英語圏文学・日本文学の分類の枠を越え、西欧ユートピア思想が日本文学においてどのような意義を持ったのか、またそれが20 世紀以降、どのように西欧の思想と（再）共鳴するのかを検証する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research served to elucidate the development of Western utopian discourses, the influence of medievalism as a modern English cultural phenomenon on Japanese literature, and the resonance brought about among poets and writers in the war and post-war eras including Tamiki Hara. These objectives delineated herein facilitated the shedding of light on the framework of utopianism as a transnational, universal thought. Whereas postcolonial readings have long lost its strength, in current period of reactionary responses to global political and ideological shifts, the process of creation and acceptance of utopian thought, as exemplified by the works of William Morris, has been gaining attention again.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
①19世紀英米のユートピアを、近代化する日本にもたらされた反近代的ユートピア文学、つまり、近代において喫緊のものとなった「人間性とは何か」を問うものとして把握し、英同時代作家のユートピアの非限定的意義と影響の解明を行なった。
②世界大戦によって海外との知的接続はある意味で断絶しかけた西欧ユートピア思想の日本での展開例を検討し、その独自性を解明することで、本研究は比較文学の観点にも資することができた。
③近代化の「手本」として英米のユートピアに触れた日本文学をこれまでよりも複層的に捉え、普遍的な人間の理想を求めるものとしての西欧ユートピア文学の地域的展開史の整理を行なった。
