| Outline of Research at the Start |
The goal of this research project is to increase behavioral repertoire of communication strategies from engaging in the classroom negotiation exercise evaluated by variables of cultural intelligence (CQ), willingness to communicate (WTC) and sociolinguistics variables related to listener and speaker communication strategies. The aim of this project is to identify Japanese students' challenges and to attend their needs in their linguistic expression of negotiation strategies in English across cultures in order to provide them tools to enhance their intercultural competences in a global setting.
|
| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The findings of this study showed that there were significant differences in the use of silence, conversation distribution, and questioning strategies between the different cultural groups. Initial findings suggested that Japanese students at Hiroshima University and international students from Asian countries preferred less explicit language expressions and strategies that emphasized creating a harmonious atmosphere. On the other hand, Dutch students tended to prefer more explicit and direct language approaches in negotiation behavior. The CQ and discourse analysis results demonstrated how Japanese students need to improve their intercultural communication skills internationally on the global stage and acquire internationally effective language strategies and more explicit and direct language approaches.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
