Outline of Research at the Start

Several experiments will take place. This will include observations of how students interact with masks and translation devices. The participants will also take part in a 30page questionnaire, a third experiment to see if participants can tell between translation devices and real translations.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Our research on translation devices in English education advanced steadily, deepening insights into the application made by the research team. I also conducted a faculty development session for the University of Southern Queensland in Australia at the request of teachers at the university Findings of our research were shared through a paper presentation at EURO CALL 2023 in Iceland. This conference allowed me revitalize professional networks and forge new connections after the disruptions caused by COVID. We are also Deliberating on ways to enhance translation devices. We also contemplated avenues for refinement and innovation in the future. Preliminary groundwork was laid for an upcoming research project slated for 2024.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research project is going according to plan. The start of the project was challenging due to the disruptions caused by COVID, however, we now believe that the project can continue as planned. We now believe that we can continue with our research as planned. We hope to conduct two experiments this year in relation to the use of translation devices in education. Once these experiments are complete, we plan to write up the results and publish in the Euro CALL journal. In addition to this, we also hope to present these ideas at both the Euro CALL conference in August 2024, and ASIA CALL conference in November 2024.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the coming academic year we plan to conduct two experiments. The first experiment will be a repeat of the experiment conducted in AY2022. This will help us evaluate how the use of translation devices has changed in the last two years. The second experiment will involve the use of a new AI based translation device. The use of this device will demonstrate how translation devices have progressed in the last two years since the widespread introduction of AI. We also plan to present our research at two conferences this coming year. The Euro CALL conference in August 2024, and ASIA CALL conference in November 2024. We hope to publish two journal papers from these conferences.
