英語の国際語化の進展に対し、非英語圏での生活者は異言語話者間コミュニケーションの場において、どのようなスタンスをとることが望ましいのか。英語学習・使用を際限なく強化するのでも、非現実的に英語の拒否を主張するのでもない、「節度をもって英語をつかい、他手段とつかいわける」ことを主張する節英論（『節英のすすめ』萬書房、2016年）の基盤を明確にし、かつ同様の問題が観察可能な世界各地域における、英語教育・使用を抑制する動向に関する調査を実施することで、「節度ある英語使用」の意義と可能性を探究することを本研究は目的としている。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study was conducted on the premise of the current hegemony of the English language. While recognizing its convenience, it also aimed to deepen, from multiple perspectives, a balanced approach to engaging with English, referred to as "Setsuei" (moderated English use) with an awareness of the social injustices it can produce. The central focus of the Setsuei framework lies in acknowledging the harms that may arise from overdependence on English and promoting the complementary use of English alongside other linguistic and non-linguistic means of communication. Based on this awareness, the study included comparative analyses of the role English plays in Japan, Western countries, and Chinese-speaking regions, and explored the theoretical relationship between Setsuei and the concept of linguistic justice.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は英語と節度をもってつきあうことを提起した「節英」論を発展させることを意図して実施された。英語が異言語話者間におけるコミュニケーションの媒体としての位置を独占的に占めるときに生じる社会的不公正・排除のメカニズムを明らかにし、その解消のためにはなにが必要かを多面的に検証した。
