Outline of Research at the Start

A) Fiscal Year of 2022. I intend to study documentation deposited at Parishes in Portugal. After that phase, I intend to study documentation deposited in the Historical Archives of Lisbon (Filmoteca Ultramarina Portuguesa, Arquivo Historico Ultramarino, Torre do Tombo Archive, Biblioteca Nacional).

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

Throughout this year, I remained dedicated to executing the research outlined in my plans. The culmination of this effort was the public presentation of our findings at three distinct conferences. Simultaneously, I devoted time to crafting two scholarly articles, slated for imminent publication. Additionally, I am in the final stages of completing a book, with aspirations for its release by the conclusion of the upcoming year.
Conferences: 1-"The Japanese, Korean, and Chinese slavery in the Portuguese Empire," Eurasia Crossings Dynamics of Cross-Cultural Encounters between East and West, University of Lisbon, Portugal, 2024/02/22 2-“The Spanish Inquisition and Asian Slavery: The Case of Diogo Fernandes,” SEMINARIOS IMAGETICA E CONEXOES MUNDIAIS, University of Lisbon Lisboa, Portugal, 2023/09/18 3-“Uncovering Historical Silences: Female Experience Amidst the Japanese Invasion of Korea (1592-1598),” Aftermath of the East Asian War of 1592-1598", Autonomous University of Barcelona, Spain, 2023/09/13

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The advancement of this research has proceeded according to plan, without encountering any significant obstacles. Currently, we are deeply immersed in the phase of analyzing the documentary materials collected. Each piece is undergoing careful scrutiny to extract relevant insights. We are confident in the relevance and usefulness of the outcomes of this analysis and look forward to disseminating them to the public through publications and presentations in due course.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

In the Fiscal Year of 2024, my research agenda centers on a thorough exploration of the archival holdings within the Historical Archives located in Mexico City. Specifically, my attention will be directed towards the examination of records housed within the Archivo General de la Nacion, Archivo General de las Notarías, and Archivo Historico del Ayuntamiento de Mexico. During this period, my primary objective is to scrutinize the marriage, baptism, and death registrations pertaining to Asian and Japanese emigrants, particularly within the context of the early modern period. Furthermore, in conjunction with my archival investigations, I am committed to the preparation of scholarly publications. This will include the development of a comprehensive book, synthesizing the findings derived from the archival materials analyzed.
