前課題〔H30-R3年度・基盤研究（C)〕までにとりくんできた，異文化（日本）と直接的に対峙した外交代表の思想と行動に関する研究成果をふまえたうえで，従来の研究成果をさらに深く検討するため，本国政府による外交政策決定，およびその背景にある極東戦略の形成・変容に焦点をあて，これを外務機構（制度と人材）の諸問題から実証的分析によって捉えかえす。これは，フランス外交当局による異文化理解の形成局面に迫る一環であり，従来のフランス政治外交史研究を，外務本省レベルの観点から深化させる試みである。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
As part of an investigation into how the cross-cultural experience of French diplomacy resulted in its Far Eastern strategy, this study examined the two aspects of French Second Empire diplomacy: the view of Japan's political system held by French diplomatic representatives, and the institutional reorganisation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. With regard to the latter aspect in particular, the study traced remodeling process concerning French diplomatic representation, particularly within the consular system. This idea is based on the view that reorganising the structure of the foreign service might better express the Far Eastern strategy of its authorities in terms of foreign policy. French diplomatic experiences with Japan at the end of the Edo period also might have involved recognising the limitations of the traditional diplomatic system in the newly contacted Far Eastern areas, in which consulates doubled as diplomatic missions and private merchants held consular posts.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究は，フランス外交による初期の対日外交期における異文化接触・理解の側面に着目しており，これを外交代表（外交官）の存在様式、および外務機構の編成様態に関連づけて考察する方法は、従来すぐれて国家間外交史の枠組で考察されてきた日仏外交史研究からすれば一定の独創性をもつ。また、それをフランス本国の豊富な一次史料に依拠して解明することも大きな特徴である。日本国内においては、幕末史に関連する一般的関心が非常に高いといえ，本研究はそのような知的需要に対する西洋史研究の側からする貢献ともなりうると期待される。，今後とも継続的・精力的にとりくみたい。
