Outline of Research at the Start |
By applying the gravity theory to economic growth, this research attempts to develop an empirical model that incorporates economic impact of neighboring countries on economic growth of a country and apply it to a panel of world countries to estimate the neighboring impact empirically.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
In AY 2022, I drafted out a working paper, “Impact of Near Economic Center on the Economic Growth of Neighboring Countries in Asia”and presented it at two international conferences to disseminate it. This study estimates economic impact of neighboring country on the growth of a country in Asia by constructing a unique dataset of the near economic center (NEC) of a country and combining it with the Penn World Tables database. The study shows the premium of having a rich neighboring country in economic growth and identifies the factors that facilitate a developing country to absorb the geographical premium successfully.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
My research is progressing as expected. I have worked to construct the dataset that required huge time and efforts during the first half of AY 2022, which I expected when I started this project. Once it is completed, I used it to produce a paper in the second half of AY 2022. This is exactly the progress I expected and planned.
|
Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In AY 2023, I will submit the paper I drafted in AY 2022 to an academic journal for possible publication. I will use the dataset I constructed in AY 2022 to investigate “the economic impact of a country on its neighboring countries in Europe." Now I have a better idea about my research after finishing the first paper and presenting it at the conferences. By applying accumulated knowledge and expertise about the neighboring impact of economic growth, I will implement this year’s research. This would fulfill my initial research plan for AY 2023.
