Outline of Research at the Start

生命現象などで新たな知見のもとに提案された保存量のあるモデル方程式系に着目し,パターン形成・ダイナミクスを特徴付ける解の構造を解明することを目的とする.このような系は,現象に対応するパターンや特徴的なダイナミクスを,パラメータに対してロバストに生成し表現することができるので,生命現象やソフトマターの分野で重要度が増している.今回の研究では,モデル系のパターン形成を記述する解と,特徴的なダイナミクスを引き起こす力学系のメカニズムを数値計算と数学解析の両面から解明していく.その成果は,自発的に引き起こされるパターン形成の現象をモデル化する研究者に新たな知見を与える.

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We have obtained results that clarify the solution structure of mass-conserving reaction-diffusion models describing localized patterns and dynamics on cell membranes. Specifically, we identified the parameter conditions for Turing instability in a mass-conserving system of three variables that model localized patterns on the cell membrane, and provided a rigorous proof for the existence of spiky stationary solutions which play an important role in the motion of localization patterns. We also investigated the solution structure of a mass-conserving system of four variables describing localized patterns on the plasma membrane in a model of asymmetric cell division, and proved the existence of solutions corresponding to such patterns. In addition to these results, we established mathematical theories that reveal new aspects of a certain reaction-diffusion models.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

研究対象となったモデル方程式は細胞生物学の膜上の特異なタンパク質の局在現象を現象論的にモデル化したもので,我々の研究はそのモデルの性質の数学的な意味づけを与えている.また数学的結果の持つ普遍性から,他の分野のパターン形成やパターンダイナミクスのモデルに対して知見を与える成果として意義がある.数学研究の対象を幅広い分野へ広げる意義のある研究成果である.
