Outline of Research at the Start

すばる望遠鏡の超広視野カメラHSCと多天体分光器PFSを用いた撮像・分光深宇宙探査は,高い感度で従来の10-100倍の広領域をカバーする革新的な超大型観測研究である.研究代表者らは先行するHSC撮像探査に基づき,赤方偏移z~4にある明るい遠方銀河の個数密度が近傍宇宙での観測から期待される関数形に対して超過している可能性を指摘した.このことは,遠方宇宙において銀河進化を理解する上で鍵となる星形成抑制フィードバックの効果が限定的であることを示唆しているが,HSC撮像だけでは大きな系統的不定性が残されている.本研究は残るPFS分光探査によって,撮像だけでは解決できないこの新たな課題に取り組む.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

今年度は引き続きジェームズ・ウェッブ宇宙望遠鏡(JWST)による深宇宙探査データをもとに高赤方偏移にある銀河の形態を調べた.まず,赤方偏移4から10程度にある149個の銀河(うち29個は分光同定されている)について,静止系紫外光および可視光の高分解能NIRCam撮像データに対して表面輝度プロファイルフィッティングを行なって,それらのサイズ(半光度半径)を求めた.フィッティング自体の不定性だけでなく,AGNや銀河間相互作用の影響,過去の研究との比較の際の空間分解能の違い,静止系可視にあるHaや[OIII]といった強い輝線の影響などによる系統的な不定性も丁寧に考慮した.解析の結果,高赤方偏移銀河の静止系可視(UV)でのサイズは0.05-1.6 kpc(0.03-1.7 kpc)であり,それらのサイズ比は1と矛盾しないことがわかった.また,静止系可視とUVでの位置の間に有意なオフセットはないこともわかった.これらのことから,高赤方偏移銀河において可視光を占める比較的軽い星は大部分が星形成領域に分布していて,UVを占める重い星の分布とよく似ており,高赤方偏移銀河は十分に若い銀河種族であることが示唆される.つまり高赤方偏移銀河は,赤方偏移0-2程度にある銀河が示しているようなinside-outな銀河進化の兆候が見える前の,銀河進化の初期段階にあると考えられる.これらの成果をまとめた論文を査読雑誌に投稿し,研究会などで発表した.さらに,すばる望遠鏡の多天体分光器PFSによる分光深宇宙探査に向け,広視野カメラHSCによる最新データをもとにした遠方銀河サンプルの更新を報告した論文を出版した.

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

当初予期されていなかったすばる望遠鏡などのトラブルによりPFS探査の開始は遅れている.ただ,JWSTによる深宇宙探査データは順調に取得され続けたため,昨年度の成果を進展させた高赤方偏移銀河の形態研究に取り組むことができた.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

すばるPFS探査が開始されたら,そのデータ解析に取り組み高赤方偏移銀河の検出を目指したい.また並行してJWSTなどによる深宇宙探査データの解析も随時進めていきたい.
