Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では, 「太古の火星に存在した大量の水はどのように失われたのか」という問いに対して, 地表から宇宙空間まで水が輸送・消失する物理・化学プロセスを理解する事を目的とする. そのため, 現在の火星大気において水蒸気がどのような鉛直高度分布をしており, それがどのような要因で変動し, 宇宙空間への消失につながるのか, 欧州及び日本の最新火星探査機と地上大型望遠鏡による観測で詳しく調べる .

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本年度は特に「課題(C): MMX火星探査機による局所高速鉛直水輸送過程の解明」を行なった。MMXの打ち上げが2年延期され、本研究期間内に火星に到達しない見込みとなったため、既存の火星探査衛星の高空間分解能分光撮像観測データを用いることとした。具体的には、欧州火星探査機MarsExpressの分光撮像装置OMEGAを用いた。まず、高解像水蒸気観測データ解析アルゴリズムを完成させた。高解像度分光観測データ解析の困難な点は、データ点の多さから、放射伝達計算による反転解析に膨大な時間がかかることである。本研究で開発したアルゴリズムでは、計算に入力する変数を想定される範囲内の代表的な値で格子点に区切り、水蒸気吸収帯のスペクトルを予め計算し、保存した配列から多次元補間によって計算スペクトルを得ことで、効率的に反転解析を行うことを可能とした。さらに、同アルゴリズムを南半球の夏時期に観測されたOMEGAデータに適応し、高解像水蒸気分布が朝夕で変動する興味深い初期結果を得た。同内容を元に国内学会で講演するとともに、仏・OMEGAチームと議論を進め、来年度に国際専門雑誌へ論文として投稿する準備を進めている。

加えて、欧州火星探査機ExoMars Trace Gas Orbiterの観測データをから、火星大気に存在する一酸化炭素が炭素13に乏しい事を明らかにした。本結果は、 The Planetary Science Journal誌において論文として出版され、東京大学新領域創成科学研究科、及び欧州宇宙機関ESAのプレスリリースで発表された。

Reason

本研究では3つの課題を挙げているが、課題A「欧州TGO火星探査機観測データの解析による水蒸気鉛直高度分布全体像の解明」は遂行しており、課題C「MMX火星探査機による局所高速鉛直水輸送過程の解明」の内容もMarsExpressのデータを用いることで順調に進捗させることができた。残りの期間で2つの課題が遂行できるよう取り組む予定である。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

「(課題B) ALMAサブミリ波望遠鏡観測による砂嵐内部の水蒸気分布の解明」「(課題C) MMX火星探査機による局所高速鉛直水輸送過程の解明」に引き続き取り組む。
課題Bでは、2018年の火星全球規模の砂嵐時に行った観測データの校正を、ESO/ALMAのVillard博士と協力して、近年のALMA惑星観測で積み上がりつつある最新の手法を用いておこなう。その後、サブミリ波観測で実績のある京都産業大学の佐川教授やNASAゴダード宇宙飛行センターのVillanueva博士らと協力して、ALMA火星観測 に特化した放射伝達・反転解析コードを共同開発し、ALMA火星観測データから砂嵐内部の水蒸気鉛直高度分を導出する。砂嵐時と静音時の比較、またベルギー王立宇宙科学研究所のDaerden博士らとの協力により、大気大循環モデルによる数値計算とも比較することで、砂嵐時にどのような物理プロセスで水蒸気が鉛直輸送されているのかを明らかにする。
課題Cでは、今年度明らかにした、南半球夏における、興味深い高解像度水蒸気分布を考察し、国際学術雑誌に論文としてまとめるとともに、MarsExpress/OMEGAの全データを解析し、局所高速鉛直水輸送過程の解明に迫る。
