| Outline of Research at the Start |
明治維新後は国策として、あらゆる分野で西洋の技術・文化を習得することに邁進した。建築分野においても近代化＝西洋化として論じられてきた。しかしながら、いわゆる和風建築は明治・大正・昭和期を通して膨大な数が建てられており、近年ではそれらの中から多数の建物が近代和風として評価されている。
本研究では、これまで見過ごされてきた伝統建築技術に着目し、我が国の近代化を西洋化とは別の視点から捉え直すことを目的とする。具体的には、①近代高等教育機関での伝統建築に関する教育内容の検証、②建築洋書が和風建築に及ぼした影響、③近代大工文書の調査及び分析、④意匠的観点と構造的観点から遺構の検証を行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
After the Meiji Restoration, as a matter of national policy, Japan made great strides in acquiring Western technology and culture in all fields.In previous research, the modernization of Japanese architecture has been discussed from the perspective that modernization means Westernization.This study aimed to focus on traditional architectural techniques that have been overlooked until now, and to reexamine Japan's modernization from a perspective other than Westernization.Specifically, we reconsidered Japan's modernization by 1) examining the content of education on traditional architecture at modern higher education institutions, 2) examining the influence of Western books on architecture on Japanese architecture, 3) researching and analyzing documents from modern carpenters, and 4) examining remains from the perspectives of design and structure.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
明治以降、近世以来の和の建築（伝統建築）や近代和風建築と称される伝統的な様式や技法を基本とする優れた建築が全国に数多く建てられている。それらは江戸時代以来の伝統的建築技法を保持してきた技術者（工匠）の存在なくしては造られなかった建造物である。この様な明治以降の伝統的建築様式の継承や技法の変化・発展、技術者の活動内容も我国の近代化の一側面として捉えることが必要である。即ち、従来から研究されてきた建築の西洋化という視点に加え、伝統建築技術の継承と展開という視点を加えることによって、我が国の近代化を真に理解することが可能となる。
