Outline of Research at the Start

放射光X線を用いた先端分光分析を均一系触媒反応のメカニズム解析に適用することで、これまでブラックボックスであった触媒反応の中間体を分光学的に決定する。特に、パラジウムやロジウムといった触媒として広く用いられている3d,4d遷移金属について、電子と強く相互作用するL核からの電子遷移に着目し、触媒活性と電子状態の相関を半定量的に明らかにする。また、それを実現するための機器開発を合わせて推進することで、他の金属・非金属系にも広く使える基盤を構築することで、当該分野の発展に貢献する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we aimed to elucidate the properties of molecules that emerge during organic chemical reactions and to gain a deeper understanding and interpretation of organic chemistry. To this end, we advanced the analytical technique of X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS), which utilizes synchrotron radiation X-rays. We developed a solution cell for XAS experiments, which is capable of handling organic solvents, in tender X-ray (TX) region. And by making this TX-XAS solution cell available for collaborative research, we were able to reveal the properties and structures of molecules in solution that had previously been inaccessible through spectroscopic methods. The outcomes generated through the promotion of this research have been published multiple times in top-tier international scientific journals, and we believe they have contributed to firmly bridging the interdisciplinary fields of organic chemistry and synchrotron radiation.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

本研究の遂行によって、これまでブラックボックス的に議論されていた溶液中における分子のリアルな分子構造を明らかにすることができるようになった。それにより、有機化学分野において科学的に新しい知見・知識が拡充されたことは社会的意義があると言える。また触媒分子の正確な構造や電子的性質がわかるようになったことは、高活性な触媒を創出するための解像度の高い手がかりが得られるようになったということを意味しており、今後の有機化学・触媒化学の学術基盤を形成するものであると考えている。
