Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We focused on the marking behavior of adult male brown bears during the mating season, observing pedal marking, regional differences in the complexity of back rub marking, the content of information exchanged by chemical substances, and the information conveyed by these substances. We observed several cases of unusual gait patterns as pedal marking, but could not determine that it was an effective means of exchanging information. Dorsal rub markings tended to become more complex with population density. Dorsal sebaceous gland secretions were identified, suggesting individual differences. It was suggested that individual differences and sexual maturity could be identified by the odor of this substance. Through these studies, some aspects of odor communication transmitted by adult male animals during the breeding season in brown bear society were revealed.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
