オリゴデンドロサイトは神経軸索に対して髄鞘を形成し、髄鞘・神経ネットワークを構築する。髄鞘・神経ネットワークは複雑な神経回路網の同調性を高め、意欲や社会性などの情動機能に深く寄与する。我々は髄鞘・神経ネットワークの破綻が情動機能にどのような影響を与えるか解明することで、情動機能の障害が認められるうつ病を初めとする精神疾患の病態解明に繋げる。
