Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

This study examined the effects of alterations in hepatic dendritic cells, caused by abnormal lipid metabolism, on the pathogenesis of autoimmune hepatitis (AIH). A high-fat diet increased the expression of major histocompatibility complex (MHC) class II among hepatic dendritic cells and decreased the number of plasmacytoid dendritic cells in the liver.; however, no functional changes were observed in these cells or in intracellular fat accumulation. Further, hepatic injury in AIH was exacerbated by a high-fat diet, resulting in loss of plasmacytoid dendritic cells and increased serum TNF-α levels. Overall, these results suggest that lipid abnormalities may exacerbate AIH, with limited involvement of hepatic dendritic cells.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
