Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Brimonidine, an adrenergic α2-receptor agonist and one of the drugs used in the treatment of glaucoma, has been shown to have a strong inhibitory effect on the progression of visual field damage compared to its intraocular pressure lowering effect and is thought to have neuroprotective effects, but the details of its mechanism of action remain unclear. In this study, we analyzed gene expression changes induced by brimonidine in cultured human Muller cells and found that the expression of neurotrophic factors such as nerve growth factor (NGF) and brain derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) increased 1.5-fold at 6 hours after the addition of brimonidine.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
