Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
To regulate organ size and morphology, we analyzed the effects of FGFs on the development and morphogenesis of maxillo-oral organs. Mouse incisor tooth germs showed dose-dependent inhibition of elongation, enamel hypoplasia and dentin hyperplasia, and enlargement of the servical loop region upon the addition of FGF2. Furthermore, the expression of undifferentiated marker gene (Notch1) was increased, and the expression of differentiated marker genes (Amelogenin and Ameloblastin) were decreased in the tooth germ epithelium. On the other hand, the expression of both undifferentiated/differentiated marker genes (Msx1, FGF3, Dspp, Runx2) was increased in the tooth germ mesenchyme.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
