本研究の学術的意義は、国際化に対応した医療提供をするために、医療現場においてどのような言語使用が有効かを提言することにある。
もし、日本語を解さない人が患者となった時、医療従事者には日本語のみならず英語やその他の言語使用も求められる。その場合、「やさしい日本語」の発想と同様に、確実に伝わる平易な表現、具体的には、多くの国の人が義務教育で学ぶ英語表現を用いれば、伝わる可能性が格段に上がる。本研究では日本国内の医療従事者を対象として、まずは母語である日本語で「やさしい日本語」の考え方を理解し、それを「やさしい英語」に応用して活用できるよう、マニュアルを作成して研修体系を整える。
