人々は古来より美しい風景を好み、その美しさに癒されてきた。しかしながら、その理由について科学的エビデンスを与える研究は乏しい。住む場所の環境が健康の重要な決定要因であることがわかってきているが、近隣環境の「美しさ」がどのように認識され健康に影響を及ぼすかを検討したものは限られている。そこで本研究では、環境美の神経基盤を明らかにすることで、主観的な美の感覚を客観的に測定可能な表現型と結びつけることを試みる。さらに、「美しい」と感じる場所に住むことの健康影響、「美しい」と感じる環境因子を明らかにすることで、新たな切り口から人々の健康を見据えた町づくりに資するエビデンスの提供を目指す。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
People have long had a taste for beautiful landscapes and have been soothed by their beauty. However, studies providing scientific evidence for the reasons for this preference are scarce. Therefore, this study aims to clarify the neural basis of environmental beauty and the relationship between living in a “beautiful” place and health. In this study, we examined the effects of living in a beautiful environment on the brain, and were able to publish a paper in an international journal. In addition, we analyzed the relationship between living in a “beautiful” place and health-related behaviors and health, such as confinement and mental health among the elderly, and proceeded to publish the results in a paper.

美的感覚の曝露を、客観的に測定できる脳画像を用いて特定の表現型と結びつけることで、美が数値化できない定性的な研究分野にとどまらず、他分野との融合を推し進めることができた点で学術的価値が高い。「美しい」と感じる場所に住むことの健康影響を明らかにしたことで、人々が古来より美しい風景を好み、その美しさに癒されてきた理由に科学的エビデンスを与えることができた点で学術的独自性が高い。人々の健康を見据えた町づくりには「美しさ」の要素も重要であることを示唆できた点で社会的意義がある。
