Outline of Research at the Start

現在の熱帯太平洋域表層水温の特徴である西高東低パターンは、約500-300万年前の鮮新世には存在しなかった可能性が先行研究によって指摘されている。過去の高水温海域がどこに存在したのかは、全球気候に影響を及ぼす大気循環を理解する上でも欠かせない。これまで報告の少ない中央部の水温変動を復元することで熱帯太平洋全域の水温パターンの時系列変化を描き、鮮新世以降の全球寒冷化と熱帯太平洋水温構造変化との関係を明らかにする。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

To understand the interrelationship between the development of the east-west asymmetry in the tropical Pacific and global cooling during the Quaternary, we reconstructed surface and sub-surface water temperature variations over the past 2.2 million years using planktonic foraminiferal Mg/Ca paleothermometers in marine sediment cores from the Manihiki Plateau and western tropical Pacific, in the tropical central Pacific. .
The changes in surface water temperatures indicate that there was a period of time when the central tropical Pacific was warmer than the western tropical Pacific 180-600 ka, and that the central Pacific at that time also had warmer sub-surface water temperatures. This suggests that the warm water mass gradually spread from the central Pacific to the western Pacific, and that the development of the atmosphere-ocean interaction was closely related to the global climate.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

現在我々が直面している地球温暖化が今後どのような環境変化を引き起こす可能性があるのかを理解するためには、過去の温暖期に起こった事象を理解する必要がある。本研究の成果は、地球上で最も温暖な太平洋の熱帯域が過去200万年間に起こった全球寒冷化に果たした役割を理解するうえで重要な知見をもたらした。太平洋熱帯域の東西非対称性は全球気候変動と密接に関わっており、温暖期から寒冷期への移行において一翼をになっていた可能性を示した。
