The aim of this project is to establish a baseline for understanding what the critical success factors are for successful rural tourism destinations; two sites will be used as case study location; Shirahama-cho and Susami-cho.

The achievements of this project include the publication of journal articles, special issues such as Rural Society and Wakayama Tourism Review, book chapters, and numerous conference presentations, and the organisation of an international conference related to rural tourism in Shirahama, Wakayama prefecture.

This research contributes to both scientific and social significance. The findings have been shared with local communities and internal and external stakeholders and have been disseminated through journal articles, book chapters, and international conferences.
