宮島のまちなみ景観は江戸期から昭和初期にかけて建造された木造の「宮島町家」の風情が最も重要な要素となっている。町家の保存を検討する際には、外観デザインと建築構造の相互関係を十分に踏まえた上で保存方法を検討し、それがまちなみの形成にいかに反映されるかを考慮する必要がある。そこで、「宮島町家」の外観デザイン特性と構造的特性の基礎的知見を整理していくとともに、良好なまちなみ景観を形成するための外観デザイン指針および構造的保全手法の提示を目指した技術的検討を行う。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study focuses on Miyajima in Hiroshima prefecture and aims to further improve the quality of street space with historical townscapes. The most important element of Miyajima's townscape is the atmosphere of "Miyajima-Machiya" houses built from the Edo period to the early Showa period. When considering the preservation of Machiya houses, it is necessary to consider preservation methods that fully consider the interrelationship between the exterior design and architectural structure, and how this is reflected in the formation of the townscape. Therefore, we organized basic findings about the exterior design characteristics and structural characteristics of "Miyajima-Machiya" and conducted technical studies aimed at presenting exterior design guidelines and structural preservation methods to form adequate townscapes.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
宮島町家が残る地域一帯が2021年に「重要伝統的建造物群保存地区」に選定され、宮島を管轄する廿日市市では伝統的資産の保全による観光地としての魅力向上に取り組んでいる。しかしながら、魅力あるまちなみ景観を形成していくには、伝統的建造物の現状保存という建築技術だけではなく、宮島町家のまちなみ景観を構成する市街地造成の歴史・文化的な文脈の理解に基づいて、町家の保存・保全・修復・修景のための指針を示す必要がある。本研究の知見は、宮島町家を活かしたまちなみ景観の形成に資するものである。
