現代日本において「キリシタン」という言葉は広く知られています。その際「キリシタン」という語から連想されるのは「カクレ」「迫害」「踏絵」「殉教」などであり、それらはキリシタンイメージを形成するステレオタイプな言葉となります。しかしながら、キリシタンが行った活動や信仰継承の仕方などを見る時、キリシタンの実態が必ずしもキリシタンイメージと重なるわけではありません。ではそのイメージはどこから生まれ、そのイメージを生成するものは何であるのか。これらについて「キリシタン遺物」と「キリシタン叙述」から究明することを目的として本研究は行われます。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
Christianity in Japan, or "Kirishitan," spread through Jesuit missionaries during the Azuchi-Momoyama to early Edo periods. However, with the Tokugawa shogunate persecution, the Kirishitan community entered the "Hidden Christian" period. In the absence of religious leaders, worship shifted to material objects, giving rise to a unique culture of venerating specific items across regions.It was only during the Taisho and early Showa periods that the existence of Kirishitan gained wider recognition, marking the beginning of a "boom period" in public interest. During this time, replicas of sacred objects were created, and even items with uncertain origins were revered as Kirishitan relics.This study aims to explore the relationship between faith and relics in Kirishitan history, focusing on how material culture preserved faith and identity among Hidden Christians and influenced later reverence for Kirishitan artifacts.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
キリシタン遺物とされるモノは世に多く存在する。例えば十字架、ロザリオ、壷、食器、日本刀の鍔など、聖遺物とされて大事に保存されてきた。しかしその多くが昭和期以降のキリシタンブーム期に作成された現代の模造品であることが多い。模造品に信仰という文脈から意味が付与されて世に広まるのである。このように、本研究の学術的な問いとその成果は、宗教言説の意味付与は如何にしてなされるかにある。近年、多くの人文学分野で学術的／非学術的といった画定によって隠蔽されがちなあらゆる種類の事象や叙述の創造的機能を解明する研究が増えている。本研究は、このような近年の学術的動向を踏まえた上でキリシタンに特化して究明した。
