Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Based on discussions of urban environmental history that have been gaining attention in recent years, this study attempted to examine the public hygiene and health policy in the imperial city of Augsburg from the late Middle Ages to the early modern period. As the importance of historical epidemiological research has increased with the experience of the worldwide epidemic of new Coronavirus disease, we have attempted to approach the above issue with particular attention on the urban response to the plague in medieval and early modern Augsburg. Although there was a delay in the progress of the original research plan due to the clarification of “the relationship between plague and the Jewish community,” which was not part of the original plan, we were able to examine the impact of the plague epidemic on urban society from a more multifaceted perspective.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
