Outline of Research at the Start |
Objectives: evaluate and compare the causal impacts on farmers’ take-up of crop insurance and payment default among the three timings of premium payments (pay-up-front, pay-at-harvest, installments). Research plan: AY2022: conducting baseline survey, 1st intervention AY2023: conducting 1st follow-up survey, 2nd intervention, and attending an international conference AY2024: conducting 2nd follow-up survey, attending an international conference, and submitting manuscripts to international journals

Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
The final goal of this research is to improve farmers’ uptake of agriculture insurance in developing countries. The initial research plan focuses on intervention related to timings of premium payments. In real implementation, I have slightly changed the intervention to premium subsidies. I have investigated the long-term direct and spillover effects of subsidies on crop insurance adoption in Vietnam. To attain the research objectives, my research target in the AY2022 was to conduct a baseline survey and first intervention. This target was achieved. I collaborated with Thai Nguyen University of Agriculture and Forestry (TUAF), CARE International (an NGO), and Women Union to conducted a randomized controlled trial (RCT) with members of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs); a form of autonomous microcredit groups; established by ethnic minority women in Lai Chau province of Vietnam. The baseline and intervention were conducted in April-May and November-December 2022. Preliminary results showed the spillover effect from the full subsidized farmers to other farmers in their network (VSLAs). I have planned to conduct further surveys to explore mechanisms of the spillover effect and investigate the long-term impacts of the subsidies. Preliminary findings of this research were presented at the 62th WRSA Annual Meeting, Asian Economic Development Seminar of Kyoto University, and JADE/GRIPS Development seminar.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
I conducted baseline survey and the first intervention as initial planned. In addition, I got some preliminary findings and presented the research at academic conference and research seminars.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
In the AY2023 (April 2023-March 2024), my research targets are [1] to conduct follow-up surveys [2] to attend an international conference [3] to submit a manuscript to a SSCI journal with impact factor The follow-up surveys will be conducted in April-May and November-December 2023. Then, I will submit a manuscript to an international conference and to a SSCI journal by January 2024.
