Outline of Research at the Start |
This research will provide greater understanding of work and careers in entrepreneurial ecosystems (among entrepreneurs, startup employees, freelances, supporters), examine how they relate to other locally-specific ways of economic participation and what support is needed depending on local context.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
To better understand evolving models of work and careers in entrepreneurial ecosystems (EEs), I continued to work on the sub-projects: 1) examination of career pathways in EEs (data analysis ongoing), 2) empirical analysis of human capital and EE factors affecting startup survival (joint research where we completed the first round of analysis and identified different survival and failure categories, now followed by quantitative analyses and supplementary interviews), 3) systematic literature review of work in EEs (joint research where we identified complex types of outcomes related to work in EEs). I also started new international collaborations - comparative studies of East Asian startups regarding their (non)internationalization and entrepreneurial orientation, including the role of human capital.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.
Reason
In this academic year, I continued the work on the KAKEN project. Coding of relevant qualitative data from my doctoral database to explore career pathways in EEs in Japan has further progressed. Other ongoing sub-projects (systematic literature review of work in EEs, empirical analysis of human capital and EE factors affecting startup survival) and a start of new international collaborations (comparative studies of East Asian startups regarding their (non)internationalization and entrepreneurial orientation, including the role of human capital) have exceeded initial expectations, so there is a good progress with the research agenda. I also published or advanced towards publication papers that formed the basis of this project. One of the papers presented at a conference received the Palgrave Macmillan AJBS Best Paper Award (2023 conference of the Association of Japanese Business Studies).

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
I will continue to work on the ongoing sub-projects (multiple international collaborations, as well as coding relevant qualitative data from my doctoral database), including conference presentations and journal submissions. From April 2024 I am also commencing a new sub-project comparing Japanese and Swedish academic innovation ecosystems, with a focus on tensions, conflict, and contradictions related to the commercialization of research findings, including university-originated startups. The new and existing research collaborations address and mitigate small changes in the original research and collaboration plans (due to collaborators' change in circumstances, or when selection of cases had to be adjusted based on feasibility of data access) and provide relevant research findings.
