Outline of Research at the Start

More and more universities in Japan now teach in English but teachers often do not receive sufficient training. In this project, I will ask such instructors what kind of training and support they need and create a program that will train them to teach in English more effectively.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

In FY2023, I focused on finishing data collection, data cleaning and analysis, and writing up the results. I gathered over 100 detailed survey responses and conducted over 50 interviews (from 45 to 60 minutes long) with some of the survey participants. Survey data was thoroughly cleaned to create a comprehensive dataset for further analysis. About half of the interview transcripts have been cleaned; the cleaning of others is in progress. I completed survey data analysis and finished writing the first research articles based on the results, and I am currently in the process of submitting the article to the Journal of Higher Education.

Current Status of Research Progress
Current Status of Research Progress

2: Research has progressed on the whole more than it was originally planned.

Reason

The research process has so far proceeded mostly according to plan. Data collection was finished as planned. Transcript cleaning has been slower than expected due to slower work pace of the research assistants and, to some extent, the difficulty level of the transcripts themselves. At the same time, I have already finished the first publication based on the survey results, which is ahead of schedule and balances out the delay in transcript cleaning.

Strategy for Future Research Activity

The last steps of the project include the following:
- Finish cleaning interview transcripts
- Analyze the transcripts using qualitative analysis methods
- Present the analysis results in the second publication
- In the meantime, continue monitoring the publication status of the first publication
- Share the results with the study participants in a concise and accessible form. Many of them mentioned that such a study is critical in the field of EMI and expressed interest in receiving a brief write-up of the results.
