Outline of Research at the Start

骨格筋は人体の大半を占める組織であり、身体の支持や運動、代謝において重要な役割を果たしている。構成する筋線維型の組成によって骨格筋の性質が決定され、代謝能力や運動機能に違いが生じる。
本研究では、食品成分の1つであるデルフィニジンが筋線維型ならびに運動機能と代謝能力に与える影響を培養細胞および動物実験により明らかにすることを目指す。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Skeletal muscles are one of the most important organs in our body, making up approximately 60% of the body's mass. Skeletal muscles are composed of several types of muscle fibers, which are broadly divided into slow-twitch and fast-twitch fibers. Slow-twitch muscle fibers provide high endurance, while fast-twitch muscle fibers provide greater force. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of delphinidin, a plant anthocyanidin, on skeletal muscle fiber type shift and its mechanism. Delphinidin induces fast-to-slow muscle fiber type shift in myotubes. Adenosine monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) inhibition attenuated delphinidin-induced changes in muscle fiber type, and delphinidin affected the upstream factors of AMPK activation Thus, it was demonstrated that delphinidin induces fast-to-slow muscle fiber type conversion through the AMPK signaling pathway.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

これまでの研究でデルフィニジンが骨格筋に与える影響について、筋萎縮抑制作用を報告しているが、骨格筋の機能に与える影響は不明であった。デルフィニジンが筋線維型に与える影響とその作用機構を解明することにより、アントシアニジンならびにアントシアニンを含む新たな機能性食品の開発に貢献できる。
