Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Preferences for competition play a critical role in decisions involving competitive environments. This study examines the role of oxytocin, a neuroendocrine hormone to which women are particularly exposed during childbirth and child-rearing, in shaping preferences for competition. Through collaboration with medical researchers, we aim to clarify how oxytocin affects women’s willingness to compete. We conducted an experiment targeting women to identify when those typically averse to competition may be more inclined to opt into competitive settings. Specifically, we examined whether a single intranasal dose of oxytocin alters participants' decision to opt for competitive environments in economic experiments. The experiments were carried out with female participants at Osaka University Hospital. Data analysis is currently underway, and the research findings are being compiled.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
