Outline of Research at the Start

超高圧・超高ひずみ速度圧縮における物質極限状態に対して、バルク物質材料が有するマイクロメートルスケールまでのメゾスケール構造が及ぼす影響を、フェムト秒分解のX線プローブ計測・観察によって直接的に検討する。これまでの高圧物質科学やレーザー極限科学の研究では、メゾスケール物質構造の極限物質状態への影響はほとんど検討されてこなかった。高強度レーザー駆動の超高圧極限環境において、これらメゾ構造が物質のミクロとマクロにどのように影響しているかを、X線自由電子レーザー利用の超高速時間分解観察によって検討する。原子分子とマクロ材料を繋ぐ新しい領域で新たな知見の獲得や方法論の構築に寄与する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

ハイパワーレーザーショック圧縮とXFELプローブを組み合わせた超高速ポンププローブ法に基づいた実験を継続した。これまでに申請者らが確立してきたフェムト秒X線回折(XRD)の原子レベル観察と相補的に、高エネルギー密度物質状態に対するメゾスケール観察も継続することができた。アルミナやダイヤモンドなどのセラミックス材料の日本が強みを有する高圧合成技術などを駆使して、ナノ-サブミクロンレベルの結晶粒径、粒界、空孔などの影響を初めて実験的に検討した。数100万気圧レベルまでピーク圧力とひずみ速度を変化させたレーザーショックを駆動し、高エネルギー密度状態の物質に関して、以下の実験を実施した。
1)衝撃圧縮特性計測:アルミナ多結晶試料に対して400万気圧超までの超高圧状態を生成し、衝撃波速度を高精度に計測することで、機械力学的特性を明らかにした。結晶粒径に対する依存性を詳しく明らかにすることを念頭に、ナノ多結晶アルミナ試料の開発も並行して開始した。
2) XFEL-X線回折:約250万気圧程度までの圧力域において、多結晶アルミナ試料に対するX線自由電子レーザーX線回折観察を実施した。130万気圧領域周辺でのアルミナ結晶格子の圧縮非等方性、およびRh2O3高圧構造などへの構造相転移を観察した。
3)XFEL超解像ラディオグラフ:X線自由電レーザービームを超高圧縮状態のターゲットに非集光で照射することで、独自の撮像技術を用いたフェムト秒・サブミクロン分解の超解像ラディオグラフ観察を実施した。試料中を伝搬するショック波面およびその背後の圧縮状態に関して、単結晶および多結晶試料間の違いを観察した。

1: Research has progressed more than it was originally planned.

Reason

X線自由電子レーザーによる超高速X線回折では、高精度に格子変形を計測することで、多結晶系における材料強度が定量的に可視化できるようになってきた。また、独自に確立してきたフッ化リチウム結晶撮像素子を利用したラジオグラフでは、ショック波面およびその背後におけるマクロ-メゾ構造の影響を具体的に明らかにすることができるようになってきている。以下のような特筆すべき成果が創出されている。
1)多結晶アルミナにおいて400万気圧超までの衝撃圧縮状態を初めて明らかにできた。単結晶アルミナの衝撃圧縮曲線と定量的に比較可能なデータから圧縮率の変化を検討することができた。
2) X線自由電子レーザーを用いたX線回折パターンの観察から、250万気圧の圧力までで多結晶アルミナの圧縮の非等方性を初めて定量的に明らかにした。また約130万気圧の圧力では、アルミナ高圧相のRh2O3構造の生成を示唆する回折ピークが出現すること、およびこのRh2O3とアルミナが圧力平衡の混合状態になる可能性が初めて示された。
3)X線自由電レーザーを用いた超解像ラジオグラフ観察から、単結晶と多結晶試料において欠陥伝搬の様子が明瞭に異なることが初めて明らかになった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

開発を開始しているナノ多結晶試料に対する実験に拡張する。線結像速度干渉計(VISAR)と放射輝度温度計(SOP)からなる可視光観察と、X線観察を組み合わせて、実験によるデータの蓄積を行う。X線回折により圧縮の非等方性と圧縮率、融点近傍までの衝撃圧縮状態方程式、サブテラパスカル域での放射特性、などを解明するとともに、単結晶およびミクロ多結晶試料の結果と比較検討する。結果の公表を速やかに行う。
