Outline of Research at the Start

モデル上端高度の異なる大気海洋結合モデルを用いて長期積分を行い、結果を比較・検証することで、中層大気の有無が気候学的な海洋循環に及ぼす影響を調査する。また中層大気変動をナッジング手法によってモデルに与え、海洋循環がどのように変わるかを季節予報スケールで調査する。海洋ー対流圏ー中層大気結合を理解するために、研究参画者に加えて、国内外の地球惑星科学分野の専門家とも議論し、予報機関に役立つ情報を提供し社会に還元する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

Climate model experiments revealed that midlatitude oceanic fronts modulate the generation of baroclinic instability waves and atmospheric gravity waves, significantly influencing large-scale circulation and temperature fields in the middle atmosphere. Simulations were conducted using climate models that differed only in the model top height. The presence or absence of the middle atmosphere led to differences in lower tropospheric circulation, suggesting an impact on surface-layer wind-driven ocean circulation. However, effects on deep ocean circulation were limited, indicating the need for longer integration periods.
Further experiments were conducted using a nudging technique to constrain middle atmospheric variability. Wind stress anomalies over the ocean, caused by extreme wintertime variability events, altered subsurface ocean flows. These subsurface anomalies were found to affect atmospheric conditions in the following winter.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

中緯度海洋前線の有無が対流圏のみならず中層大気大循環の構造に影響を与えることを示したことは、気候モデルにおける中層大気のバイアス低減に海洋が大事であることを示唆するものであり、今後のモデル開発にとって重要な意義を持つ。
冬季の極端変動イベントの影響で生じた洋上の風応力偏差により海洋亜表層の環境が変化すること、それがさらに翌冬季の大気状態へ影響を及ぼしうることを示せたことは、今後の季節~数年予報にとって重要な知見になる。
