Outline of Research at the Start

天然鉱物資源として比較的存在量が多く、紫外光応答型光触媒であるアナターゼ(TiO2)と粘土鉱物の組み合わせにより、より低いエネルギーの可視光応答型光触媒複合体を合成する。粘土鉱物もTiO2もFe3+をよく吸着すると考えられ、ここではFe3+の局在性による触媒活性の変化について実験およびDFT計算によって明らかにする。対象とする光触媒反応はカーボンニュートラルの要となる糖から酸への分解とし、CO2ゼロエミッションにも貢献する。

Outline of Final Research Achievements

The purpose of this study was to understand the role of ferric ions in the photocatalytic function of natural minerals in the Earth's surface environment to accelerate mass transformation reactions. The effect of ferric ion localization on photocatalytic activity in photocatalytic composites of clay minerals and TiO2 was examined. The decomposition of phenol, the reduction and detoxification of Cr(VI), and the formation of lactic acid by the decomposition of glucose were evaluated as models. In all cases, photocatalytic activity was higher when ferric ions were localized on the clay mineral side. This is thought to be due to the fact that the clay minerals, which are inherently non-conductors, are more susceptible to photoelectron excitation due to the electron trapping level generated by the substitutional ion exchange of ferric ions, and the excited electrons use the TiO2 side orbitals due to the junction with TiO2, making recombination in the clay minerals less likely.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements

系統的に鉄担持TiO2@Mt光触媒複合体の光応答性を調べたことにより、光化学反応における粘土鉱物の役割について理解をより深め、自然界にある鉱物集合体が太陽光を受けてスイッチが入る光触媒反応の可能性を広げた。さらに、本来材料ではない鉱物を環境材料として活用する視点が生まれる。自然界における普遍的な鉱物同士の複合体に対して、置換や吸着によって不純物として紛れ込む遷移金属Feの局在性が光触媒活性に与える影響に焦点を当てることは、自然界における有機物分解機構に新しい解釈を与える地球化学的意義に加え、「資源」に最小限の手を加えて「素材」とするジオミメティクスによる新環境材料学にも光を照らす。
