Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
Cholangiopathy (CP) is a chronic liver disease with impaired bile excretion, but the causes and pathogenesis of CP are not fully understood. In this study, we established an induction system for cholangiogenesis and examined the differentiation potential into cholangiocyte from biliary atresia (BA)-derived stem cells from exfoliated deciduous teeth (SHED)(BA-SHED) and Alagille syndrome (AGS)-derived SHED (AGS-SHED), which are patients with CP. BA-SHED and AGS-SHED showed impaired bile duct formation, caused by epigenetic modification and genetic mutations respectively.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
