Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

In this study, we focused on the fighting behavior exhibited by insects, including crickets, in order to clarify how autonomous individual behavior of crickets creates order in the behavior of the entire group through local interactions among individuals. In cricket fights, when a winner is determined, the winning individual maintains its aggressiveness, while the loser attenuates its aggressiveness (called the losing effect). We constructed a system that intervenes in the fighting behavior of crickets using a small robot. By using the developed system we were able to change the behavior of crickets with the losing effect.
We also examined the mechanism of recovery from the losing effect, and found that visual stimuli, in addition to contact with other individuals, play an important role in the recovery from the losing effect.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
