Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

We attempted to explore the cognitive effects and factors involved in experiences of unreality using an approach combining neuroscience and philosophy. The neuroscience approach revealed that experiences of unreality reduced interindividual reproducibility in brain activity in the medial occipital cortex. However, no such reduction in reproducibility was observed within subjects, leading to intriguing observations. In the philosophical approach, we used our original interview method to collect detailed information on the cognitive factors that contribute to the perception of unreality in AI-synthesized images. While a variety of cognitive factors were identified, a systematic understanding has not yet been obtained. We expect that our continuous exploration will yield highly novel discoveries regarding the cognitive factors that produce a lack of reality.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
