本研究の目的は、印象派の画家クロード・モネ（1840-1926）が、第三共和政期のフランスにおいて公的評価をいかに得たのかを明らかにすることである。公的評価から無縁であったと理解されている前衛画家のモネであるが、実は、《睡蓮》が国家寄贈という形でオランジュリー美術館に設置されるなど、晩年は国家公認の画家となる。前衛画家から国家公認の画家へという過程を、美術行政における言説を分析することを通じて明らかにする。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
The purpose of this study is to determine how the Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840-1926) gained official recognition in France during the Third Republic. Through the events of the writing of the "History of Impressionism" (1894) by the art critic Gustave Geffroy, the collection of Impressionist works in the Luxembourg Museum (1897), and the exhibition of Impressionist works in the "Centennial Exhibition" at the Paris Exposition Universelle in 1900, this study examines the official valuation of Impressionism, focusing on Claude Monet. The Centennial Exhibition demonstrated that the French state, in the midst of growing nationalism, established and presented the French school of art and included the Impressionists in the French school of art.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
クロード・モネは、アカデミスムの規範に反発した前衛画家として知られ、前衛画家としての革新性が強調され、研究されてきた。しかし、モネの生前の世紀転換期には国立美術館に収蔵され、フランス美術を称揚する公的な展覧会にも出品された。つまり、前衛というイメージからは程遠い公的な画家として晩年に認知されていったのである。このモネの公的評価を扱った研究は欠落しており、この研究成果によって、現在まで続く印象派の評価を再検討できるきっかけとなるため、意義があると考えられる。
