| Outline of Research at the Start |
社会実験とは、新規科学技術の試験的な社会導入を通じて学びを得ようとする試みである。そのありかたは伝統的な科学実験とはいくつかの点で異なっており、いわゆるモード２科学的な営みである。しかしながら、モード２科学の科学哲学的分析は、これまで十分になされてきたとは言えない。本課題では、不知（ignorance）の観点から、モード２科学としての社会実験の役割や機能、そしてあるべき姿について哲学的に検討する。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
To handle ignorance in social experiments, it is important to understand the mechanisms by which scientific research gives rise to ignorance. In this study, I analyzed a history of molecular biology as my main subject. According to Kuhn's theory, a paradigm provides a framework of thought for a group of scientists who share it and defines the appropriate style of inquiry and the adequate research methodology. Paradigms are essential for efficient research, but at the same time they create ignorance. In this study, I demonstrated that each component of a paradigm can be a source of ignorance. Furthermore, I showed that it is important to juxtapose multiple paradigms in order to prevent ignorance from having undesirable consequences.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
技術開発を成功させるために重要であるのは、研究の過程で有害な無知を生じさせないことである。とりわけ、科学技術の社会実装を目指す研究においては、無知は重大な帰結をもたらしかねない。本研究では、パラダイムの内部にいる者が、そこで生じている無知を認識することは困難であることを示した。これは、科学技術の社会実装を目指す研究開発においては、様々な興味関心や価値観を持つステークホルダーを巻き込むことがとりわけ重要だということを示唆している。科学技術によって様々な問題解決を図る際に、本研究から含意される事項は、重要な意味を持つであろう。
