| Outline of Research at the Start |
本研究では、イギリス・ロマン主義の時代において、文学と美術という異領域がいかなる創造的な交差を見せたかについて検証する。なかでも画家ベンジャミン・ロバート・ヘイドン (Benjamin Robert Haydon, 1786-1846) に注目する。同時代の文人の多くと交流していた彼は、これまで想定されてきた以上に、ロマン主義時代における文芸ネットワークの重要な基軸のひとりとして機能していたのではないだろうか。この点を、歴史文献に基づいて実証的に論ずる。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This research focused on the intermediality of literature and art in British Romanticism. It proposed a new interpretation of William Wordsworth's nuanced phraseology, drew attention to some contemporary artworks as potential new sources for John Keats's poetry, and discussed the significance of B. R. Haydon's literary-artistic circle. I also used and benefited from some unpublished material. The results were presented in the form of three articles (two of which are to be published) and four oral presentations. My research findings have been well received both in Japan and abroad, and I am sincerely grateful for this research grant.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究成果の学術的意義は、ひとことでいえば、長らく等閑視されていた数多くの一次資料の読み込みを踏まえた堅固な論証にもとづき、当該学術分野における今後のさまざまな道しるべとなりうる方向性を示した点にある。具体的には、ワーズワスの措辞に関する研究においては、一世紀以上にわたる和訳の歴史における根本的な問題点を指摘し、新たな観点からの別の訳語を提言したことで、より精密な作家像の認識に繋がりうる成果を発表した。また、ヘイドンが当時の文芸サークルにおいて果たしていた役割の意義の重大さに初めて本格的に目を向けることで、この時代の文化的ダイナミズムの諸相がさらに浮かび上がる結果となった。
