Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements

It is well-known that a limited set of reflexive pronouns allow long-distance binding (i.e., finding an antecedent in a different clause). The purpose of this project was to reveal exactly what kind of reflexive pronouns belong to this set, especially given the recent development of the analysis of the mechanism of long-distance binding. I started from the analysis of Japanese reflexive anaphors “zibun”, “zibun-zisin” and “kare/kanozyo-zisin” and then extended the result to the observations regarding reflexive pronouns in other languages. This led me to claim that reflexive pronouns with a certain internal structure allow long-distance binding.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
