Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This study examined the art of persuasion of Pascal, known as a mathematician, physicist, and christian philosopher representing 17th century of France, from the three perspectives (style, rhetoric, and logical structure), with the aim of elucidating its characteristics. In the first year, I (we) carefully scrutinized two of Pascal's best-known works, The "Provincial Letters" (1656-57) and The "Thoughts" (1662), to analyze the similarities and differences in their styles of argumentation, and in the final year, I (we) attempted to compare Pascal's style of argumentation with that of Montaigne, a philosopher of the previous era, and with that of Bossuet, a contemporary apologist, and derived some of characteristics of Pascal's art of persuasion (e. g., meta-ness). The results were reported at domestic/international conferences and at research meetings, and some of them were summarized in papers.
