19世紀、米国開拓民は辺境地で数多くの民話を残した。それらは、独自性と文化性に富み、アメリカ生まれの文学サブ・ジャンルとして隆盛を極めていたものの、現在ではほとんど消滅あるいは忘却されてしまっている。つまり本研究は、民話復古にして、歴史上から消されてきた民衆の記録を発掘する作業でもある。
民話こそは、文学的価値が高いだけでなく、当時の風俗習慣を現代に伝える貴重な記録であった。そこには、意識的あるいは無意識的に黙殺されてきた米国史の暗部や恥部までが余すことなく映し出されているからだ。特に女性に関しては極めて希少な史料となることから、本研究が文学および民俗学に多大な貢献をもたらすことは間違いない。

| Outline of Final Research Achievements |
This project has researched 19th-century folktales to compile "Mark Twain’s Annotated Tales and Sketches: Comic Journalism and Folklore," an American humor collection with annotations derived from unpublished folklore sources and their studies. Enormous numbers of American humor were published or compiled in a book but scarcely discussed or analyzed for its difficulty reading obsolete, therefore unknown, phrases, spoken languages or dialects, and jokes they contained. The folktales or what is now called “folklore” by folklorists are the last piece lacking in the American literature study. Given that American humor was the predecessor of 19th-century realism, this book and this literature study with “folklore" in view will contribute to the new criticism of American literature tradition.

| Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements |
本研究で扱うAmerican humorは、アメリカ独自の文学ジャンルとして注目されてきたが、地域性の強さから、難解とされ、研究が進められてこなかった。しかし、民話という民俗学的史料を参照することで、解読不能であった19世紀の表現や冗談、あるいは暗喩の解読に成功した。つまり文学研究において民話は看過されてきたが、作品の解釈には欠かせない貴重な情報源だったことが判明した。American humorがリアリズム文学へと発展していくことなどを考えれば、民話を用いたアメリカ文学研究という道筋を提じた本研究の意義は大きい。
