Outline of Research at the Start

Outline of Final Research Achievements
In animals where males mate multiply, sperm depletion can reduce reproductive success. To clarify sperm allocation strategies in such contexts, I first examined sperm depletion in individual males using medaka, an externally fertilizing fish. Under laboratory conditions, males spawned with multiple females (mean 19 times/day), showing marked sperm depletion: sperm counts declined to 0.5-6.3% by the last spawning. Fertilization success decreased after ~10 matings, though partial recovery occurred the next day. Courtship and spawning durations also declined, likely due to male fatigue. Despite sperm limitation, females did not reduce clutch size. These findings reveal substantial male reproductive costs and potential sexual conflict, offering a foundation for understanding sperm allocation in multi-male systems.

Academic Significance and Societal Importance of the Research Achievements
