Outline of Research at the Start

本研究では、地球惑星環境の形成とそこでの化学反応・分子システム形成を記述する理論と、それに対応する多岐にわたる惑星探査による実証の両輪により、原始地球・火星・小惑星など太陽系に広がる環境に応じた有機化学進化の多様性を理解することを目的とする。地球科学、化学、生命科学の融合を推進してきた東工大・地球生命研究所が中核となり、これに「はやぶさ2」探査メンバーと、NASAジェット推進研究所、コートダジュール天文台など海外拠点を加えた国際体制を構築する。海外派遣については常時30名を超える若手研究者が参画し、我々が獲得した地球-生命の起源論を宇宙に展開し、宇宙における生命の探求に格段の発展をもたらす。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は、地球・火星・氷衛星の多様な表層環境の形成・進化に立脚し、その環境で生じうる有機化学進化と分子システムの形成を理解することである。本研究では、実験やモデルによる理論と、太陽系探査による実証の両輪で、この目的を達成する。
「a-1 初期太陽系における物質移動」では、原始太陽系のダストや微惑星の移動に関するシミュレーションを用い、はやぶさ2などの小惑星探査の結果を踏まえた太陽系形成論の再構築を行う。特に、はやぶさ2試料の化学分析から、前太陽系の揮発物質が地球を含めた太陽系内側領域まで、小天体として運ばれたことを明らかにした。
「a-2 初期大気・海洋の量と化学組成」では、高温高圧の原始地球内部を再現した室内実験とジャイアント・インパクトのシミュレーションを組み合わせ、地球や火星の形成終期におけるコア・マントル間の元素の分配と、その結果生じる初期大気・海洋の量と組成を明らかにする。特に、生命必須元素のリンがコアとマントルとの間の分配を明らかにし、現在の地球マントルのリン量を説明した。
「b-1 惑星環境と有機化学進化の相関関係」では、形成した惑星環境が進化する中で生じる有機化学進化について調べる。特に、二酸化炭素が凝結する低温の外側太陽系の氷天体では、二酸化炭素によって岩石中のリン酸塩鉱物が溶解し、リンに富んだ海洋が普遍的に出現することを明らかにした。
「b-2 進化可能な分子システムの普遍的特性と誕生の理解」では、合成生物学に基づく室内実験および複雑系理論モデルを用いて、機能をもった分子群が一つのコンパートメントを形成するための環境の特定と、そのようなコンパートメントが周辺環境に対応して進化するダイナミクスの解明を行う。特に、生命進化におけるヒエラルキーの成長と細胞分化を数理的に表現するモデルを構築し、多細胞化を促す駆動力を数理的に明らかにした。

Reason

現在まで、特に「a-1 初期太陽系における物質移動」と「a-2 初期大気・海洋の量と化学組成」について、太陽系探査における国際共同研究で、特筆すべき多くの成果が得られている。はやぶさ2探査では、地球に持ち帰った小惑星リュウグウ試料の国際共同化学分析によって、多くの前太陽系物質が見つかった(Zeichner et al. 2023 Sci. Adv.; Nguyen et al., 2023 Sci. Adv.)。その前太陽系物質には、芳香族炭化水素など、炭素・窒素を多く含み、これらが原始地球を含む内側太陽系領域まで運ばれてきていることを実証的に明らかにした。これまで地球ができるような内側太陽系では、原始太陽系円盤内で多くの化学物質が熱分解・再生成されるという描像が一般的であった。これらの研究は、外側太陽系には、前太陽系物質が多く残り、それらが原始太陽気の惑星移動に伴って、内側太陽系領域まで運ばれてきていることを示している。
また、NASAカッシーニ探査機による、土星衛星エンセラダスの地下海洋の観測では、海洋から噴出する氷微粒子を国際共同研究で分析し、エンセラダス海洋にリン酸が異常濃集していることを明らかにした(Postberg et al., 2023 Nature)。外側太陽系では、水氷だけでなく、二酸化炭素やアンモニアも氷となって海に含まれる。この溶存した二酸化炭素とアンモニアによって、岩石中のリン酸鉱物が不安定になって、海水に溶けだすことを実験から明らかにし、エンセラダス海洋でリン酸が異常濃集しているメカニズムを明らかにした。これらの研究は、太陽系の外側領域では、リン酸やアンモニアが濃集した水環境が普遍的に成立していることを示唆しており、同様にリンや窒素を多く必要とする地球生命の材料が効果的に生まれる水環境に迫るものとなった。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

今後は、太陽系のなかで見えてきた、土星以遠の外側低温領域におけるリンや窒素に富んだ水環境、また、木星や火星といった中間領域における硫黄に富んだ水環境における化学進化を実験と探査の両輪で重点的に明らかにしていく。特に、木星系に関しては、欧米の大型探査機が次々に打ちあがっており、また火星に関しては、NASAの探査車が探査を進めている。これら大型探査計画との国際共同を組織的に進め、そこでの化学進化の予測とその結果生まれうる機能を持った分子システムの予測を行っていく。これを実現するため、若手研究者を中心として、アメリカ・フランス・ドイツなどへの長期派遣を行うと共に、太陽系探査と合成生物学や生物物理学とのさらなる連携を強化していく。
