Outline of Research at the Start

地球のまわりの宇宙空間(ジオスペース)は、太陽から常に吹き付けている太陽風や下層大気から伝わってくる大気波動によって、常に大きく変動している。本研究では、日本が保有する国際地上多点ネットワーク観測網と欧米の最新の科学衛星による観測・グローバルなモデリングを組み合わせ、ジオスペース変動研究とその予測のさらなる国際化・高度化をはかり、安全・安心な宇宙利用に貢献する。また、若手研究者や大学院生を本研究に参加させることにより、地上観測・衛星観測・モデリングを組み合わせた研究を通して将来のジオスペース研究開発の中核を担う研究者・技術者を育成し、この分野の国際共同研究の中長期的な発展につなげていく。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

・本事業の参画機関が保有・参加する国際地上観測ネットワークによるジオスペース・地球大気の観測を維持・継続し、国際共同研究のための観測データを取得した。また海外共同研究者と協力して、欧米の人工衛星やモデリング、日本のあらせ衛星等と組み合わせた国際共同研究を実施。地球大気の変動とジオスペースの相互作用の学術的問いに関する研究を進めた。これらによる代表的な成果として、米国Kistler教授らとの共同研究として、あらせ衛星、米国および欧州の科学衛星による観測結果から、宇宙嵐を引き起こしているのは、従来原因と考えられてきた太陽起源のプラズマよりも、地球起源のプラズマが主要因であることを発見した。また、極域のリオメータ多点観測網のデータから、磁気嵐時にジオスペースから高エネルギー粒子の大気への降込みが経度方向に拡がる様子を明らかにした。
・多種多様な地上・衛星観測データやモデリングデータを統一して比較するために、各種データのデータベースを構築するとともに、それらを統合的に解析することを可能にする統合解析ツールの開発を、IUGONETや名古屋大学の統合データサイエンスセンターと連携して行った。これらのデータベースやツールは、国内外の研究者に広く公開され、より広範な国際共同研究の推進に貢献している。
・本研究の人材育成として、大学院生12件の海外派遣・招聘、大学院生・学部生の8件の海外フィールド観測派遣、8件の国内フィールド観測派遣を実施した。さらに、国際組織SCOSTEP等と連携し、5月にイタリアのトリエステで国際スクールを開催した。また、子供向けマンガ「宇宙天気ってなんだ!?」を日本語・英語で刊行し、本事業やSCOSTEPのWebで公開するとともに、SCOSTEPと連携して国連宇宙平和利用委員会で配布した。

Reason

令和4年12月に本事業が採択されてから現在まで、本事業の参画機関が保有・参加するグローバルで総合的な国際地上観測ネットワークによるジオスペース・地球大気の観測を維持・継続し、国際共同研究のための観測データを取得することができている。この観測との比較のために、海外共同研究者であるドイツのStolle教授、米国のKistler教授・Lu博士らと協力して、彼らが開発・運用する欧米の人工衛星やモデリング、日本のあらせ衛星等と組み合わせた国際共同研究を進めている。また、これらの多種多様な地上・衛星観測データやモデリングデータを統一して比較するために、各種データのデータベースを構築するとともに、それらを統合的に解析することを可能にする統合解析ツールの開発を、IUGONETや名古屋大学の統合データサイエンスセンターと連携して行っている。また、本研究の人材育成として、研究アシスタントとして博士後期学生3名とポスドク研究員2名を雇用している。このうち1名の研究員は、2023年度にテニュア承継職員に採用され、本事業の研究分担者となった。また、2023年度は、研究者7件、大学院生12件の海外派遣・招聘、大学院生・学部生の8件の海外フィールド観測派遣、8件の国内フィールド観測派遣を実施した。さらに、国際組織SCOSTEP等と連携し、5月にイタリアのトリエステで国際スクールを開催した。また、一般向け解説マンガシリーズ「宇宙天気ってなんだ!?」を日本語・英語で刊行し、本事業のWebで公開するとともに、SCOSTEPと連携して国連などの場で配布した。以上のことから、本研究はおおむね順調に進展していると判断した。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

・本事業の参画機関が保有・参加するグローバルで総合的な国際地上観測ネットワークによるジオスペース・地球大気の観測を維持・継続し、太陽活動極大期に向かって活発化しつつあるジオスペース変動について、国際共同研究のための新しい観測データを取得する。この観測との比較のために、海外共同研究者であるドイツのStolle教授、米国のKistler教授・Lu博士らと緊密に連携し、彼らが開発・運用する欧米の人工衛星やモデリング、日本のあらせ衛星等と組み合わせた国際共同研究を推進する。これらを通して、地球大気の変動がジオスペースにどのように影響を及ぼすか、ジオスペースの変動が地球大気にどのように影響を及ぼすか、という2つの大きな学術的問いに迫っていく。
・多種多様な地上・衛星観測データやモデリングデータを統一して比較するために、引き続き、各種データのデータベースを構築するとともに、それらを統合的に解析することを可能にする統合解析ツールの開発を、IUGONETや名古屋大学の統合データサイエンスセンターと連携して行う。これらのデータベースやツールは、国内外の研究者に広く公開し、より広範な国際共同研究の推進に貢献していく。
・本研究の人材育成として、若手研究者・大学院生を本研究に参加させる。このため、博士後期学生を研究アシスタントとして雇用するとともに、博士号取得後の若手研究者をポスドク研究員として雇用する。これらの若手研究者や大学院生を海外Co-Iや海外研究協力者の研究機関に滞在させたり国内・海外フィールド観測に参加させたりすることで、地上のみならず衛星観測とモデリングという異なる視点から研究課題にアプローチできる広い視野を持って自立した研究者を育成していく。国際組織SCOSTEP等と連携し、ナイジェリアなどで国際スクールを開催したり、海外機関に所属している大学院生を日本に招聘する。
