Outline of Research at the Start

星間分子雲でその存在形態がよく分かっていないS原子を含む分子が,星間塵表面でどのような進化過程をたどるかを実験的に調べる。特にOCS, CS, CH3SH等の分子に着目し,極低温(10K程度)の擬似星間塵氷表面におけるH原子付加反応の実験を行う。それぞれの分子に対して反応生成物,反応経路,および反応速度の温度依存性を赤外吸収分光法,昇温脱離法を用いて測定する。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究の目的は,星や惑星誕生の場である星間分子雲に存在する固体微粒子,氷星間塵上での硫黄を含む分子の化学反応を実験的に検証し,宇宙における硫黄の化学進化をより詳細に理解することである。研究対象として,これまでに星間分子雲で観測されている硫黄を含む化学種,硫化カルボニル(OCS),メチルメルカプタン(CH3SH),二酸化硫黄(SO2)を選択した。超高真空(10-8Pa程度)チャンバー内で作製し,10ケルビン(K)に冷却されたアモルファス氷上にそれらの分子を蒸着し,水素原子との反応を検証した。反応はフーリエ変換型赤外吸収分光高度計でその場観測され,さらに氷から脱離する成分は四重極型質量分析計で分析された。
いずれの分子も水素原子との反応には活性化エネルギー障壁が存在するため,通常10K程度の極低温では熱的に反応しえないが,量子トンネル効果による水素原子付加反応が進行した。OCSからはチオギ酸(HCOSH),SO2からはスルフィン酸(HSOOH)など,これまでの天文観測ではなじみのなかった硫黄を含む分子が生成し,CH3SHを含むいずれの分子も水素原子との反応で最終的に硫化水素(H2S)を生成した。硫化水素は水素原子との反応で容易にガス化するため,これらの硫黄を含む分子はいずれも氷星間塵上には固体として残りにくい化学種だと考えられる。これは,これまでの天文観測結果と極めて調和的である。
上記の研究成果の大半は既に学術論文として公表され(Nguyen et al. 2021, 2023; The Astrophysical Journal),現時点でもう1報の論文投稿の準備がほぼ整っている。さらに,関連する化学反応を対象とした量子化学計算論文に実験データを提供し,実験と理論の両面で星間化学の発展に大きく貢献した。
