Outline of Research at the Start |
This research work focuses on understanding the mechanisms responsible for the auroral ion precipitation and its ionospheric effects using both global modeling and observations.
|
Outline of Annual Research Achievements |
RAM-SCB simulations were conducted to understand the impact of proton precipitation caused by wave-particle interactions on the ionospheric dynamics during geomagnetic stormtime. The simulations show that localized proton precipitation resulting from EMIC waves resulted in localized enhancement of conductivity in the evening side. This further gave rise to high speed westward flow in the ionosphere similar to the Subauroral Polarization Streams (SAPS). The study further highlights the importance of proton precipitation in modulating the ionospheric dynamics. Additionally, the sources and mechanisms of generation of EMIC waves in the inner magnetosphere during periods of solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement and their subsequent impact on the ionosphere are studied using the satellite/ground measurements.

Current Status of Research Progress |
Current Status of Research Progress
3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.
Reason
We encountered some challenges while integrating WPI into the standalone RAM-SCB. We will continue our data-model comparison as soon as we resolve the issues with the integration of WPI in the model. We're in the process of preparing a manuscript for the simulation study on SAPS.

Strategy for Future Research Activity |
The results of the simulation study conducted to understand the impact of proton precipitation on the ionospheric dynamics will be submitted to Geophysical Research Letters. The results will also be presented in the upcoming conferences (AGU, SGEPSS). As for the second study on the mechanisms of generation of EMIC waves in the inner magnetosphere during periods of solar wind dynamic pressure enhancement and their subsequent impact on the ionosphere, the data analysis is complete. The simulation results from the model will be compared with the satellite and ground-based measurements.
