Outline of Research at the Start

海洋の酸性化は海洋生態系に大きな影響を与えるといわれており、近年盛んに研究されているテーマである。過去の大量絶滅事変は、海洋酸性化等の環境変動とそれが生態系に与えた影響を直接観察できる絶好の研究材料である。本研究では、特に良好に保存された化石試料を採取・分析することによって白亜紀末の大量絶滅事変における海洋酸性化を復元し、それが当時大繁栄していたアンモナイトの絶滅とどのように関連していたのか、について検証を行う。

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

本研究では、地球史上において生物多様性が劇的に減少した大量絶滅事変のひとつである白亜紀末のK-Pg絶滅事変のメカニズムに焦点を当てる。とりわけ、類似した殻形態を持つアンモナイトとオウムガイ類に注目し、アンモナイトはなぜ絶滅しオウムガイは絶滅を免れたのか、という疑問について、その要因の1つとして提唱されている仮説のひとつである海洋酸性化と絶滅の選択性の関連を検証する。
本研究プロジェクト4年目となる2023年度は博物館収蔵標本・野外調査で採取した標本のCT撮影を引き続き行った。取得したCTデータの解析から撮影した化石標本のいくつかについては良好に保存されていることを確認した。本年度の前半にニューヨークのアメリカ自然史博物館からスイスのチューリッヒ大学へ研究拠点を移した。チューリッヒ大学博物館収蔵標本の観察を行い、また本研究の研究協力者であるクリスティアン・クルーク教授とディスカッションを行いながら研究を進めた。前年度に引き続きCTデータを用いた形態計測を進めた。さらに電子顕微鏡による化石標本の観察も引き続き行っている。年度の後半にはチューリッヒ大学から京都大学へと研究拠点を移した。京都大学で所属する石村豊穂教授の研究室では酸素・炭素同位体分析を行うため準備を進めている。その他の化学分析については、年度内に大陸間の研究拠点の変更が二度あったこともあり、準備ができていないため、次年度(2023年度)以降行う予定である。

3: Progress in research has been slightly delayed.

Reason

研究開始年度である2020年度に新型コロナウイルスが蔓延し、研究活動に大きく支障がでたため全体としては当初の計画よりやや遅れている。2021年度後半~2022年度になり、通常通りの研究活動ができるようになったことにより化石のCT撮影等を行い成果が出始めているものの、特に分析関連について当初の計画から遅れている。

Strategy for Future Research Activity

来年度以降は、アメリカでの野外調査を再度行い、標本のCT撮影、電子顕微鏡を用いた標本の観察、化学分析を順次行う予定である。化学分析については当初アメリカで行う予定であったが、日本国内・もしくはヨーロッパで行うことも検討している。これまでは海外を拠点としていたため、研究補助人員を雇うことが難しかったが、来年度は研究補助の人員を補充し分析を進めこれまでの遅れを取り戻す予定である。
