Outline of Research at the Start

海棲哺乳類は海は浅海域から深海域,北極域から南極域まで世界中の海に進出している海棲哺乳類であるが,海洋進出初期には比較的限られた地域に生息していたことや,現在と非常に大きく異なった形態を持っていたことが知られている.現在見られる多様な形態,生息域を獲得するまでには複数回の多様化と進出海域拡大イベントが起きている.これまで,個々の分類群については多様化・海域拡大についての研究が多く行われてきているものの,海棲哺乳類全体としての多様化・海域拡大についての知見は極めて少ない.そこで,海棲哺乳類の海洋進出を化石からその進化・絶滅・多様化の要因を明らかにする.

Outline of Annual Research Achievements

世界中の海に進出している海棲哺乳類であるが,その海洋進出は異なる時代にまたがって数回起き,進出初期には現在と大きく異なった形態を持っていたが,その後,各系統で独自に形態を多様化させると同時に,生息域を拡大させたことが知られている.これまで,個別の分類群について多様化・海域拡大を議論した研究は少なくないが,異なる系統を含む海棲哺乳類の全体像を同一の視点から比較検討する試みはほとんどなされていない.そこで,特に頭蓋骨内に残された脳神経・感覚器形態など,化石から抽出可能な生息環境を反映する全ての特徴についてCTスキャン等を用いて精査し,そこから海棲哺乳類の多様化・生息海域拡大の要因を明らかにするために研究を遂行している.

今年度も主にスミソニアン国立自然史博物館を研究の拠点として研究を遂行した。それに加え,California州Orenge郡から見つかっている超大型の海棲哺乳類の化石についても併せて研究を遂行した.

本年度は本研究課題の最終年度であったため,学会発表および研究のまとめに重点を置き,研究を遂行した.
